Wonderfully said Randal 🙏😊 I love that you are using the word “communion” with your clients. I never thought of it in the light of the addiction, but it is something so sacred to me (although I am not Catholic) and represents the intimate relationship with god, the Universe, the higher self... and I believe that we addicts were searching for that thing our whole life, it was just directed to a wrong object of communion, a wrong spirit .. ❤️

Thank you, Maki! Yes, most of my work around addiction begins with exploring a big, loaded concept - like communion. When I bring this into a group, it stirs up polarities in opinion, and if held just right...creates just enough tension for us all to offer another perspective...I never tire of listening and learning

Well said, Randy. In recovery I looked for values of my own to try to live by. I wanted to stand for something integral, but I didn't know what.

After a few guides and much searching, I made a list of seven words~mnemonics to remind me of who I am when I feel confused. And one of those words is communion.

Mike, I love the ways we frame our conversations to something bigger or going the other way to something deeper and more authentic, as you say here "to remind me of who I am." Beautiful. We can go outward and find communion, or we can go inward and find communion.

Spot on Randal. Ritual lives in addiction and in recovery. Powerful practices to “set up” our indulging. Now it’s about being present; my fave buried in one of my dogs fur, sipping my coffee slowly preparing to meditate, lacing my running shoes for the sweat. All of it to replace the old rituals around using. 🙏

And again...

Thanks for this, Dee - and as I was reading your new rituals...I was picturing you somehow doing all of them at the same time ; )

Multi-tasking is a myth 😎

Thanks Randal! I was just talking to someone last night about how I substituted alcohol/drugs/live music for communion with the divine. I'm so glad I made it to recovery and thus a true connection.

Alston, thanks so much for sharing. One of my beliefs about spirit is how they provide interesting insight or validation through synchronicity - love this - and yes, true connection rocks!
